When should I call my insurance company?

If you plan on filing a claim for insurance coverage as a result of the disaster, you should call your insurance company as soon as possible.  You should discuss your policy with your agent to see what is covered.  Do not start major repairs or throw away damaged items until an insurance adjuster has seen the damage.

What if my insurance company denies my claim?

If your insurance company denies your claim, ask them for:

  • A full copy of your policy
  • A written denial letter explaining why the claim was denied

FEMA will ask for these documents if you are applying for FEMA assistance.

You should also review your insurance policy to see how to appeal the denial. An attorney may be able to help you challenge the insurance company’s decision.

What if insurance covers only part of the damage?

If your insurance pays for some damage but not all of it, you may still apply for FEMA assistance. You will need to give FEMA a copy of the insurance letter showing what was covered and what was not. FEMA may help with costs your insurance did not pay.
